I'd beg to differ on ruby, but maybe you can enlighten me. Ruby not needed for what, just compile? It seems integral to the droidgap commands.

How does one do
droidgap update
to update a project to the latest framework? The
droidgap.bat/
file contains the following:

 ruby %~dp0droidgap %1 %2

and that does indeed seem to depend on ruby and not the included file

 phonegap-android\lib\jruby-complete-1.4.0RC1.jar

Maybe there is a way to do this from within Eclipse?

Good tip on the Android environment var, it now looks like a best practice might be along the lines of setting three variables for the Android "home" path for the various IDEs. I say this based on PhoneGap docs, your comment, and notes on Appcelerator Titanium and Android SDK Tools r8. I'm updating my system to:

 ANDROID_SDK=C:\android-sdk-windows

 ANDROID_HOME=%ANDROID_SDK%

 ANDROID_SDK_HOME=%ANDROID_SDK%

Just another heads-up to others who may use multiple Android development tools.

I'm going to use a similar pattern for bash shell environment vars on the Mac too. Over there it will be:

export ANDROID_SDK=$HOME/android-sdk-mac_86

export ANDROID_HOME=$ANDROID_SDK

export ANDROID_SDK_HOME=$ANDROID_SDK

I'm avoiding BlackBerry development for as long as possible-- to me, everything pre-BB 5.0 was more hassle than it was worth. (See John Resig comments on slide #28 here- http://www.slideshare.net/jeresig/testing-mobile-javascript.) I might consider some future version or the Playbook stuff.

Thanks for the tips and sharing Tom! I can totally relate on the updates for phonegap. I've been tinkering w/ iphone OS using phonegap, but really appreciate the tips for Android. Curious why you are using iUI? It was one of the first frameworks and seemed to be to dated/limited for me. I've found that iWebkit has the most potential to support older mobile browsers. For newer browsers, jQuerymobile.com seems most promising, but still in ALPHA.

You know that ruby isn't needed anymore?
There is a java version of the ruby in the phonegap folder.

Also take in mind, you that the andoid plugin for eclipse will bug the BB plugin (if you would want to use it).
Also if you want to test on a device i recomend installing HTC sync (if debugging on a HTC device that is).
Also, a lot of installation will bugg if you don't have a global variable called:
ANDROID_SDK_HOME = %ANDROID_SDK%

Just a heads up and a tip for other developers.

I agree, it worked great with Xcode. Likewise, I agree with Zachary below; once it is dialed in, it seems to just work. Updating your Android and Xcode projects to latest PhoneGap frameworks works well too.

Interesting comment about Adobe. Yesterday, I mentioned to someone that PhoneGap is to HTML/JavaScript as Adobe AIR is to Flash/ActionScript— a cross-platform wrapper/extender that provides consistency and more access to OS capabilities than the "un- wrapped/extended" source.

Nice writeup. My experience was very similar. Now that I have PG setup, it is very easy to use. PhoneGap might make some more progress if they could somehow make an setup process that doesn't take a new developer 20 hours to setup and configure to test it out the first time.
